In 1969, then prime minister Pierre Trudeau famously said that living beside the United States was like “sleeping with an elephant.” Indeed, a beast of such size is impossible to ignore in even a king-sized bed, and his every grunt and movement becomes the problem of his bedfellow.
Canadians love to conceive of our relationship with the United States like this: we are helpless and can do little against the giant beside us. Roll over. Put a pillow on your head. Hope to God he doesn’t roll over on you.
But the relationship is much more than a tale of a helpless small animal keeping an even keel in the midst of an elephant. Our identity is formed not simply by lying beside the beast, but also by using the United States to whitewash and obscure our own reality.
The United States is more like a thick fog that we use to hide reality and create the fantasy that we are better: our racism is kinder, our inequality is milder, our problems aren’t as bad and therefore, life here is great.

PPD is one of the most VIOLENT police force in the US shooting more people than LAPD and NYPD in 2018… but i need medical help and i need to buy masks and albuterol for my breathing treatments as my breathing has gotten worse since the tear gas and heat exhaustion

if the bill passes, this gives the ph government the right to arrest ANYBODY under the notion of being a “terrorist.” they will monitor everybody’s internet. this is a direct violation of freedom of speech and it’s unfolding right before our eyes.
Comrades in Minneapolis—this video from Chile shows how to extinguish tear gas canisters quickly, safely, and easily.
To deal with tear gas canisters, take a water jug with a wide mouth, put a little baking soda, dish soap, and/or vegetable oil in the jug of water—3 tablespoons of each to 1 liter of water. Pick up the canister with protective gloves (it’s hot and can burn you!), drop it in the jug, and shake the jug while covering the top with your gloved hand just enough that the gas doesn’t get out. Don’t cover the top too tightly—you don’t want to make the jug explode.
